Privacy Policy

Introduction

This privacy policy explains what the SurfTap Apple Watch app ("the App") and the SurfTap website ("the Site") collect, where that information goes, and the choices you have.

The SurfTap App

Location

SurfTap asks to use your location while you're using the App. It uses your location to:

• Get conditions where you are. The App finds your approximate location (within about 100 meters) and sends those coordinates to StormGlass.io to request wave, wind, water temperature, and tide data.
• Show the name of your town or beach. Your coordinates are sent to Apple's geocoding service to look up a place name.
• Record surf sessions. While a session is running, the App records a precise GPS track to map your session, measure distance and speed, and estimate the waves you rode.

If you don't allow location access, SurfTap shows conditions for a default spot and for spots you've saved, but you won't be able to track sessions. You can change location access at any time in your Apple Watch settings.

Spot Search and Saved Spots

When you search for a spot, the text you type is sent to Apple's geocoding service to find matching places. Spots you save are stored on your watch.

Surf Sessions and Apple Health

Session tracking uses Apple's workout features. With your permission, SurfTap:

• Reads your heart rate and active calories during a session to show them in your session summary
• Saves each completed session to Apple Health as a surfing workout, including its GPS route

SurfTap also keeps your 30 most recent sessions on your watch, including the time and place, GPS track, wave count, ride distances and speeds, average heart rate, calories, and a snapshot of the conditions. Session history is never uploaded. You can delete sessions in the App, and deleting the App removes all of it.

SurfTap never sends your health data to us, StormGlass.io, or anyone else, and never uses it for advertising. Workouts saved to Apple Health are managed by Apple. You can review or delete them, and change SurfTap's Health permissions, in the Health app on your iPhone.

Other Information Stored on Your Watch

• The latest conditions report for each spot, so the App works offline and stays within StormGlass.io's request limits. A copy is shared with SurfTap's watch face complications.
• Whether you've accepted the App's safety disclaimer
• How many times the App has refreshed conditions today

What the App Doesn't Do

• No account or sign-in
• No ads, analytics, tracking, or crash-reporting tools
• No SurfTap servers. The App only connects to StormGlass.io and Apple's services.
• We never sell your information.

The SurfTap Website

The Site doesn't use cookies, analytics, or tracking of its own. A few third parties help serve it:

• Hosting: The Site is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub may log technical information, such as your IP address, when you visit.
• Page styling: Pages load a styling script from the Tailwind CSS CDN, which receives standard request information such as your IP address.
• Waitlist: The waitlist form is provided by Airtable and collects your email address and anything else you enter. Airtable may use cookies on the form. We use waitlist information only to send SurfTap news and updates.

Third-Party Services

• StormGlass.io: Marine weather and tide data. Receives the coordinates of the spot you're checking.
• Apple: Location, place-name lookups, spot search, and Apple Health
• Airtable: Waitlist form
• GitHub: Website hosting

Each of these services handles data under its own privacy policy.

Data Retention

App data stays on your watch until you delete it or delete the App. Session history keeps your 30 most recent sessions and removes older ones automatically. Waitlist information is kept until you ask to be removed, which you can do by replying to any email we send you.

Data Security

Because SurfTap has no accounts or servers, App data stays on your watch, protected by watchOS. Requests to StormGlass.io use encrypted HTTPS connections. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.

Children

SurfTap isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
